Small Yard / Raised Beds
Small yards and raised beds provide the benefits of in-ground gardening while allowing improved soil control and drainage. Raised beds warm faster in spring and allow gardeners to customize soil composition.
Soil & Drainage
Raised beds should be filled with a well-balanced mix of compost, topsoil, and organic matter. Proper soil structure improves drainage, root development, and nutrient availability.
For soil-related concerns, refer to Soil & Nutrient Issues in the Troubleshoot section.
Sunlight Requirements
Most vegetables require 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Leafy greens can tolerate partial shade.
Plant Selection for Small Yards
- Tomatoes
- Peppers
- Beans
- Lettuce and spinach
- Carrots and radishes
- Zucchini (with space planning)
Spacing & Airflow
Even in small yards, proper spacing improves airflow and reduces fungal disease risk. Overcrowding commonly contributes to foliage and pest problems.
